National Industries for the Blind (NIB)

National Industries for the Blind (NIB) is dedicated to enhancing opportunities for people who are blind, primarily through employment. NIB has nearly 100 associated nonprofit agencies nationwide, like Envision. Envision is pleased to be an NIB associated agency.

NIB’s impact is made possible through the sale of SKILCRAFT® products and services produced and delivered by people who are blind. SKILCRAFT is a registered trademark owned and licensed by NIB. The SKILCRAFT line includes thousands of offerings — from office supplies and hardware to knowledge-based professional services — that meet or exceed exacting government standards, including the rigorous requirements of the U.S. military.

AbilityOne

Established by the Javits-Wagner-O’Day Act, the AbilityOne program allows federal government departments to purchase goods and services at fair market prices from nonprofit organizations who employ people who are blind or visually impaired or have other disabilities.

Given the staggering 70% unemployment rate among people who are blind or visually impaired, we are proud to partner with AbilityOne to drive positive change. As a leading employer of individuals with vision loss, we provide hundreds of jobs in operations, manufacturing, sales, management, administration, and more.

Advocating for Change

Did you know that nearly 70% of working-age Americans who are blind or visually impaired are unemployed? Envision, as a National Industries for the Blind (NIB) associated agency, is striving to change this statistic by advocating for a 1% utilization goal for AbilityOne by the U.S. Department of Defense.

In 2022, the Department of Defense (DOD) issued a voluntary pledge to double its current AbilityOne Program utilization, increasing from just 0.55% up to 1% in five years.

NIB and its nearly 100 associated nonprofit agencies nationwide, like Envision, want to build momentum and formalize this pledge through Congressional adoption of a statutory goal of 1%.

By formalizing this goal and nearly doubling the DOD’s current utilization of the AbilityOne Program, tens of thousands more Americans who are blind or have significant disabilities could have the opportunity to build meaningful careers in both professional services and manufacturing that enhance their personal and economic independence.
