Envision University hosted its quarterly Grand Rounds presentation in June, featuring a presentation by
Envision Research Institute Research Fellow Sarika Gopalakrishnan, PhD, FAAO. This Grand Rounds presentation had 45 attendees, including occupational therapists, optometrists, and other professionals in low vision rehabilitation.

Envision University Grand Rounds is supported by an educational grant from Grene Vision Group and is a part of Envision University’s ongoing efforts to provide valuable learning opportunities for professionals in the field of low vision rehabilitation. These Grand Rounds presentations allow experienced professionals to share their expertise on crucial topics, enhancing the quality of care for individuals with visual impairments. Attendees not only gain insights into the latest advancements in low vision rehabilitation but also earn licensing credits, making the sessions both informative and professionally rewarding.

Gopalakrishnan’s presentation focused on The Application of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) Technology in Low Vision Rehabilitation. Gopalakrishnan shared her cutting-edge research and insights into how VR and AR technologies can revolutionize low vision rehabilitation. During her talk, she highlighted the development of 3D virtual environments for assessing visual parameters, different scoring methods of visual performance, and the use of VR scenarios for visual rehabilitation. She discussed the functions of various AR devices in performing daily living activities and the changes in visual functions while using these devices. She also shed light on how individuals with low vision perceive and benefit from AR technology, as seen in phases one and two of her research project work through the Envision Research Institute.

Reflecting on her experience, Gopalakrishnan shared, “I felt excited to share my expertise on VR and AR technology in the field of low vision rehabilitation at Envision University’s Grand Rounds in June. I’d like to thank everyone for participating and for listening to my presentation. I felt very happy to see that people appreciated what I do, and I am truly touched by the positive feedback and kind messages from those who attended. Many thanks to Michael Epp, Manager of Professional Education at Envision University, for the fantastic opportunity!” This Grand Rounds presentation by Gopalakrishnan was a resounding success, demonstrating the transformative potential of VR and AR technologies in improving the lives of people with low vision.
