Arthur McClendon, a cashier who is visually impaired at Envision Xpress Fort Leavenworth, was honored this month for his past performance of the National Anthem during the Army Heritage Event in June. In recognition of his contribution, Leutenient General Beagle, a three-star general, presented McClendon with a military challenge coin! Receiving a challenge coin is a significant honor rooted in military tradition. The tradition of military coins has a long history, with some accounts dating back to ancient times. The Romans are thought to be among the first to use coins for military purposes, rewarding their legionaries with pressed metal coins for their achievements in battle. Challenge coins are often presented by unit commanders to acknowledge exceptional service or achievements.

McClendon shared, "It was truly an honor to receive a coin, the day was truly eventful, and I will never forget it. Any kind of service that I am able to give to the men and women that serve our country is truly an honor."
